âAll right, âfess up. Where did you get to last night? You got laid, didnât you?â
Jane gave a frantic shake of her head. âI absolutely did not. Chance would be a fine thing. I just kind of ⦠took a walk.â
âWhere? I was looking for you for ages.â
âOver to ⦠um, Premier.â
Annabel whistled through her teeth. âYou got into bed with the enemy?â
âI did nothing of the sort. I just kind of had dinner ⦠and charged it to my bossâs account.â
Annabel chortled and clapped her hands together. âPerfect. Thatâs a definite minus on the weakness points chart. Proper survival skills there. How many glasses of champagne did you have?â
âNone. I just had a couple of glasses of wine.â
âPah. Was it expensive?â
âI have no idea.â
âDo you reckon youâll get caught?â
Iâm invisible. âProbably not.â
âAwesome. We can nip over there again later this week.â
âMaybe. Not sure Iâm willing to chance my luck twice. So what happened at the Grill last night? Did you pull Jed?â
âWhat kind of a floozy do you think I am? Feminists do not âpullâ people. We occasionally allow ourselves to consider the option of being pulled. However, Jed wasnât even there. He went home. We really need to go on another hiking trip, though. I canât let my groundwork go to waste.â
âMaybe Iâll stay here next time.â
Annabel frowned, the usual jumpy enthusiasm draining out of her face. âIâm sorry, I donât meant to leave you behind. Itâs just that heâs so ⦠hot.â
Jane cringed. âMaybe in the sense of body heat generated by scowling. Otherwise ⦠eye of the beholder and all that.â
âWeâll find someone for you. Then perhaps we could double date. Mountaintop picnics and stuff. How about Dean? Heâd be totally up for it.â
âDeanâ¦.â Jane remembered Kelly Coldwinterâs sobbing and Rachelâs words. Dean never showed up. âI donât think heâs really relationship material,â she said.
âHeâs pretty handsome, though. You know, if you like the clean-shaven thing. And heâs about your age. Forty-odd.â
âIâm thirty-nine!â
Annabel sighed. âThe milestones are always hard, but youâll get used to it.â
âI will never get used to it. Iâm going to drown my sorrows until I just get washed away.â
âAh, it never happens like that.â
âWhat would you know? Youâre thirty-five.â
âAh, but Iâve lived enough emotional milestones to make me a hundred years old. Come on, stop moping. We have adventures to embark on.â
âDo we? Whatâs on the schedule for today?â
Annabel grinned. âCanyoning.â
âUh ⦠whatâs that?â
Itâs where you jump into a river and go down these natural water slides.â
âCan you do such a thing in Cornwall?â
âAccording to the schedule, you can.â
âAnd let me guess, youâve already signed us up?â
Annabel grinned. âDonât worry. You get to wear a helmet, and a life vest.â
âWhy on earth would I need those to go down a water slide?â
âYouâll see.â
