Canyoning

‘All right, ‘fess up. Where did you get to last night? You got laid, didn’t you?’

Jane gave a frantic shake of her head. ‘I absolutely did not. Chance would be a fine thing. I just kind of … took a walk.’

‘Where? I was looking for you for ages.’

‘Over to … um, Premier.’

Annabel whistled through her teeth. ‘You got into bed with the enemy?’

‘I did nothing of the sort. I just kind of had dinner … and charged it to my boss’s account.’

Annabel chortled and clapped her hands together. ‘Perfect. That’s a definite minus on the weakness points chart. Proper survival skills there. How many glasses of champagne did you have?’

‘None. I just had a couple of glasses of wine.’

‘Pah. Was it expensive?’

‘I have no idea.’

‘Do you reckon you’ll get caught?’

I’m invisible. ‘Probably not.’

‘Awesome. We can nip over there again later this week.’

‘Maybe. Not sure I’m willing to chance my luck twice. So what happened at the Grill last night? Did you pull Jed?’

‘What kind of a floozy do you think I am? Feminists do not “pull” people. We occasionally allow ourselves to consider the option of being pulled. However, Jed wasn’t even there. He went home. We really need to go on another hiking trip, though. I can’t let my groundwork go to waste.’

‘Maybe I’ll stay here next time.’

Annabel frowned, the usual jumpy enthusiasm draining out of her face. ‘I’m sorry, I don’t meant to leave you behind. It’s just that he’s so … hot.’

Jane cringed. ‘Maybe in the sense of body heat generated by scowling. Otherwise … eye of the beholder and all that.’

‘We’ll find someone for you. Then perhaps we could double date. Mountaintop picnics and stuff. How about Dean? He’d be totally up for it.’

‘Dean….’ Jane remembered Kelly Coldwinter’s sobbing and Rachel’s words. Dean never showed up. ‘I don’t think he’s really relationship material,’ she said.

‘He’s pretty handsome, though. You know, if you like the clean-shaven thing. And he’s about your age. Forty-odd.’

‘I’m thirty-nine!’

Annabel sighed. ‘The milestones are always hard, but you’ll get used to it.’

‘I will never get used to it. I’m going to drown my sorrows until I just get washed away.’

‘Ah, it never happens like that.’

‘What would you know? You’re thirty-five.’

‘Ah, but I’ve lived enough emotional milestones to make me a hundred years old. Come on, stop moping. We have adventures to embark on.’

‘Do we? What’s on the schedule for today?’

Annabel grinned. ‘Canyoning.’

‘Uh … what’s that?’

It’s where you jump into a river and go down these natural water slides.’

‘Can you do such a thing in Cornwall?’

‘According to the schedule, you can.’

‘And let me guess, you’ve already signed us up?’

Annabel grinned. ‘Don’t worry. You get to wear a helmet, and a life vest.’

‘Why on earth would I need those to go down a water slide?’

‘You’ll see.’
